Welcome back to the Creative On The Grind Podcast! It’s your girl, DeAndra, and I’m so glad you’re here today. Before diving into today’s topic, I want to take a moment to send prayers and love to everyone affected by the recent fires in LA. It’s been an incredibly tough time, and last week I decided to pause posting out of respect for what was happening. This has been a moment of reflection for so many of us, and I hope we can continue to rebuild and move forward together.
Now, let’s dive into today’s episode: The Moment I Almost Quit My Creative Business.
Hitting the Crossroads in Your Creative Business
Many of us in the creative and entrepreneurial world face moments where we ask ourselves, Is this really worth it? Should I keep going? I’ve been there. For me, this moment came during a transitional period when I was juggling my HR job and various creative side gigs. I had a passion for starting my own business, but I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted, and it left me questioning everything.
I had tried so many things—wedding planning, floristry, freelancing—and I still wasn’t gaining the traction I hoped for. At the time, I was posting on my Instagram, DeAndra Jalisa Designs, showcasing my work. While I had a few clients, nothing was consistent, and it felt like I was spinning my wheels.
I was in what I call the “messy middle”—that space between where you are and where you want to be. It’s a tough place, but it’s also a space where reflection and growth can happen if you lean into it.
The Turning Point
What changed everything for me was pivoting. I realized that the methods I was using weren’t working, and instead of giving up, I decided to try something new. That’s when I discovered balloons and transitioned into event décor.
Once I committed to this pivot, things started to shift. I took action, put myself out there, and started networking like crazy. Slowly but surely, I began to see the results I had been working so hard for.
Lessons Learned
Here are three powerful lessons I learned during this time that can help you if you’re feeling stuck:
1. The Power of Pivoting
If you’re not seeing the results you want, it might be time to pivot. This doesn’t mean abandoning your dreams—it means adjusting your approach. Maybe your business idea needs more structure, a unique twist, or a complete refresh. Be open to change, and you might discover a new path that leads to success.
2. Why Taking Action Matters
Fear of failure, fear of investing, or fear of making the wrong decision can keep you stuck. But taking action—no matter how small—is the key to moving forward. You don’t need to have everything figured out; just take the next step, and the momentum will follow.
3. Shifting Your Mindset
Your mindset sets the tone for your success. Reframe challenges as opportunities for growth. Instead of asking, Why is this happening to me? ask, What can I learn from this? Cultivating curiosity and resilience will carry you through the tough times.
Actionable Tips to Get Unstuck
If you’re feeling stuck, here are five tips to help you gain clarity and move forward:
- Evaluate and Refresh:
Reflect on your business and ask, Does my website, brand messaging, or social media represent my vision and attract my ideal clients? If not, make updates to align with your goals. - Assess Your Social Media Strategy:
Experiment with new content formats, post consistently, and show up authentically. You don’t have to post daily—focus on quality over quantity. - Invest in Education:
Take a course, attend a workshop, or hire a mentor to refine your skills. Investing in yourself is one of the best ways to grow your business. - Start Small but Take Action:
Whether it’s creating a business plan or testing a new product, take small, actionable steps. Progress, no matter how small, builds momentum. - Do Inner Work:
Reflect on your vision and values. Ask yourself what’s working and what needs to change. Clarity often comes from introspection.
Reflect and Take Action
I want to remind you that it’s normal to feel like quitting. These moments often come right before a major breakthrough. When I almost gave up, I relied on my faith and took action, even when things felt impossible.
Now, I want to invite you to reflect on your current challenges. What’s one small action you can take today to move forward? Remember, the breakthrough you’re waiting for is just on the other side of your next step.
