Have you been putting off creating an email list for your business?  Did you even know that you needed one? Building an email list is extremely valuable for your business. It can help you build connections and trust with your customers and readers. Also, it can assist in generating sales on your products and promotions. But, if you don’t have an email list for your business, you’re in the right place. You would be surprised at how many business owners do not take advantage of an email list. It would be best if you weren’t one of them. So, let’s start an email list today!

Why is an email list important?

An email list is important because it’s basically your pot of gold. When all else fails, or let’s say god forbid, Instagram shuts down. You will still have your email list to back you up. If you use your email list properly, you will build a strong tribe of supporters who will buy just about anything you offer. I think that sounds pretty important to me! Just because your business is new or you don’t have a website yet, you can still start an email list.

How do I start an email list?

When I first started my email list, I locked in the platform and then sent a text to all of my close friends and family to subscribe. BUT wait, hold up! Family and friends will support you regardless. Well, at least I hope, lol! So the real question is, how do you get the people who stop by your site to subscribe and support your brand? For example, I’m just a random girl they probably found on Instagram or Pinterest. So why would they trust me with their email address?

Spam is a thing, so emails don’t just come for free. The magic sauce is an opt-in form. An opt-in lead magnet is an email exchange for a freebie or perks that you will provide them. I don’t know about you, but I don’t go around giving my email out to just anyone. So I need a reason to give you my contact information. So creating enticing freebies and advice is how you start building your list of subscribers and, hopefully, potential customers.

Starting an email list is extremely easy. It takes like 5-10 mins to set up, and you will be off to the big leagues.

Types of email list platforms

Please note these are my honest opinions for each platform based on experience. Always use your better judgment to make the right decision for you.

Flodesk

Do you want to make the best first impression when your subscribers receive your emails? Well, Flodesk is by far my favorite platform, I actually switched over to Flodesk last year, and I’m so happy I did. The templates are beautiful and fresh and make a statement when your subscribers receive your emails. Flodesk will have your back, and it’s definitely my top choice.

The platform is easy to use even if you aren’t a tech person. I love the platform’s functionality, along with the workflows you can create for your new subscribers. Flodesk will do all of the work for you once it’s all set up properly. For example, when you receive a new subscriber, you can automatically send welcome emails, freebies, and more.

Convertkit

I used Converkit before Flodesk, and let’s say it did the job. It’s easy to use, but the only con is the pricing and the template options. The email templates are basic and boring, in my opinion. Also, they don’t have too many editing options. Many bloggers swear by it, but it wasn’t a great fit for me. However, I still recommend you check them out. It might just be the platform for you.

Mailchimp

When I first started my business, I did not have the money to pay for a monthly subscription. So Mailchimp was my best friend. Do you know why? Because It was FREE 99 and in my budget at that time. The platform is easy to use and has simple integrations for those on a budget at the beginning stages of your business. Mailchimp is not my fav anymore, but it got me started, so I couldn’t leave them out.

In conclusion, it’s up to you to figure out which platform works best for you based on price, functionality, and design. If you’re building your first email list, use MAILCHIMP, it will get you started, and you can always transfer to a paid email platform later. BUT if you have an extra $19 bucks a month to spend, get Flodesk. Anyway, my goal is to get you started, don’t sleep on yourself.
